Alan Uglow

1941 - 2011

Died in New York (United States), born in Luton (United Kingdom).

Following his art education, English-born abstract artist Alan Uglow (1941–2011) moved to New York and remained there for the rest of his life. In this metropolis, Uglow dedicated himself to building an oeuvre of painting with great care and feeling for precision focusing on the relationship between the viewer and the artwork, the subtle dialogue between center and margin, presence and absence, sometimes combined with sound recordings of his rock band Hard Labour: an extensive practice that he maintained after working a day-job in construction to make ends meet during a tough time financially, one where painting had several times been declared dead as an art form.
