Died in Paris (France), born in Ciudad Bolíva (Venezuela).
The Venezuelan painter and sculptor Jesús Rafael Soto lives and works in Paris from 1959 onwards. He paints abstract canvases, and then starts experimenting with virtual movement. In 1955 he contributes plexiglass reliefs to the controversial group exhibition Le Mouvement at Galerie Denise René. In 1958 he makes his first ‘Vibraciones,’ paintings where against a background of parallel lines he mounts light metal structures that evoke optical vibrations while the viewer passes before it.
