William Morris

William Morris was de zoon van een begoede zakenman en kon genieten van een kindertijd in weelde. Hij ging naar Marlborough en Exeter College in Oxford. Door zijn bewondering voor de prerafaëlieten leerde hij Dante Gabriel Rossetti kennen – een invloed die nog zichtbaar is in Morris’ enig overblijvende schilderij La Belle Iseult. In de jaren 1860 besloot Morris dat zijn creatieve toekomst lag in het domein van de sierkunst. Zijn ‘Firm’ (later herdoopt tot Morris & Co) stond vooral bekend om zijn glas-in-lood: voorbeelden daarvan bevinden zich in kerken in heel Groot-Brittannië. Morris maakte zo’n 150 ontwerpen, vaak met plantenmotieven. Zijn werk omhelst ook Ijslandse en klassieke vertalingen (Sigurd the Volsung, The Pilgrims of Hope) en een reeks romances in proza waaronder A Dream of John Ball, News from Nowhere, en The Well at the World's End. In 1876 ging Morris in de nationale politiek als penningmeester van de Eastern Question Association. Al snel raakte hij gedesillussioneerd in de Liberals en in 1883 trad hij toe tot de socialistische Democratic Federation. Na onenigheid met diens leider, H.M. Hyndman, vormde hij de Socialist League en later de Hammersmith Socialist Society. Hij was wellicht de actiefste bepleiter van de socialistische zaak in de jaren 1880 en gaf honderden lezingen en speeches in heel het land. In 1890 stichtte Morris Kelmscott Press, dat in totaal 66 boeken zou drukken. Morris overleed in Kelmscott House op 3 oktober 1896.
