David Robilliard

1952 - 1988

Born in Guernsey (GB), died in London (GB).

David Robilliard expertly treads the boundary between art and humour. The self-taught, Guernsey-born artist moved to London in the late seventies and created his own visual poetry, combining witty phrases, stylised figures, poignant musings on sex, friendship and the urban experience onto white canvases.

Robilliard was at the centre of a transformative period in both London’s art scene as in the emergence of the city’s gay scene. Gilbert & George dubbed their protégé and assistant “the new master of the Modern person. Looking, thinking, feeling, seeing, bitching – he brilliantly encapsulates the “Existers” spirit of our time". However, he never took himself too seriously.

David Robilliard contracted AIDS, which lead to his death at the age of 36.
