Lives in Brussels (BE), born in The Hague (NL).
Elly Strik works with charcoal, graphite, chalk, ink, oil paint and lacquer. She makes impressively large drawings, of around two by three meters in size. The large format makes the work seem very close-by, drawing encloses the viewer, as it were. Strik mainly produces portraits, of herself and people around her. She draws inspiration from her enormous photographic collection, generally of her own making. By looking at this sort of image, a new work oftimes acquires shape. The drawing reflects the moment of memory, of re-experience. Her own mood is thus very important in the genesis of a work. Most of these portraits are psychological portraits, as well: they show the inner person.
