The work of Italian artist Ettore Spalletti treads a fine balance between painting – monochrome, purist, rooted in a decidedly Mediterranean coloristic sensibility – and sculpture – threedimensional, haptic (though not meant to be touched), caught in a constant process of negotiating its hybrid position between floors, walls and the space in between. His works are made up of countless delicate layers of pigment (hence their fragility). Despite their almost immaterial atmospheric quality, Spalletti’s works exudes a sturdy, sculpture-like stability – or rather, instability.
