The Indian People’s Theatre Association [I.P.T.A.] was formed during a crucial phase of 20th Century Indian history. Events including World War II, the famine of 1943 and the struggle for Independence formed the backdrop for its emergence as a leading element of the Cultural Front of the Communist Party of India [C.P.I.]. The I.P.T.A. addressed the vexed and often contradictory questions of decolonisation, the fight against fascism, and poverty; as in the play Nabanna [harvest] where widespread starvation contrasted with the anomaly of a good harvest redirected to support the war effort, is shown through everyday lives of ordinary people.
