Jim Shaw werd in 1952 geboren in Midland, in de staat Michigan, in het noordoosten van de Verenigde Staten. Hij woont en werkt in Los Angeles en Milford. Van 1971 tot 1974 studeerde Jim Shaw Beeldende Kunst aan de Universiteit van Michigan in Ann Arbor. Daar ontmoette hij Mike Kelley, met wie hij bevriend raakte en regelmatig samenwerkte. In 1974 richtte hij samen met collega-kunstenaars en filmmakers Mike Kelley, Cary Loren en Niagra de proto-punkgroep Destroy All Monsters op.
In 1978 behaalde hij een Master of Fine Arts aan CalArts (het California Institute of the Arts) en maakte hij deel uit van de opkomende scène in Californië naast kunstenaars als Georganne Deen, Mike Kelley, John Miller, Tony Oursler, Raymond Petitbon, Mitchell Syrop, Megan Williams en Robert Williams. Jim Shaw werkte lange tijd in de filmindustrie als tekenaar en kunstenaar gespecialiseerd in speciale effecten om zijn artistieke productie te financieren, tot hij zich halverwege de jaren tachtig volledig op zijn kunst toelegde. Hij werkte voornamelijk aan horror-, sciencefiction- en fantasyfilms zoals Tree of Life (2011), The Abyss (1989), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), Hidden (1987), Objectif Terrienne (1988), The Forbidden Zone (1980), Tron (1982) en talloze reclamespots.
In 2015 wijdde het New Museum, New York (VS) een grote overzichtstentoonstelling aan zijn werk, onder de titel The End is Here. Andere solotentoonstellingen waren te zien in de Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles (Verenigde Staten); het Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams (Verenigde Staten); het Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (Verenigd Koninkrijk); het Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (Nederland); CAPC, Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux (Frankrijk); MoMA PS1, New York (VS); Magasin, Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Grenoble (Frankrijk); Institute of Contemporary Arts, Londen (VK); en Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Genève (Zwitserland). Zijn werk was te zien in groepstentoonstellingen in het Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; het Los Angeles County Museum of Art; het New Museum, New York; het Museum of Modern Art, New York; het Centre Pompidou, Parijs; en het Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Hij nam ook deel aan de 55e Biënnale van Venetië in 2013.
