Jos de Gruyter en Harald Thys werken sinds de tweede helft van de jaren 80 samen en zijn vooral bekend om hun video's.
In hun videowerk heerst een verontrustende intimiteit tussen de acteurs en de trage en monotone dialogen, afgeleid van theaterdramaturgie en geïnspireerd door kindertelevisie. De acteurs die ze gebruiken, zijn veelal ongeschoold en afkomstig uit de familie- en vriendenkring van de kunstenaars. De overdreven gebaren, sombere omgevingen en verdrietige en ontaarde personages, geïsoleerd van de rest van de wereld, suggereren een buitenwereld die een onzichtbare aanwezigheid is.
Het werk vindt haar oorsprong in zeer uiteenlopende inspiratiebronnen, gaande van bepaalde sleutelscènes uit de films van Fassbinder, Visconti en Robert Bresson, over clandestiene reality-programma’s, het arsenaal van anoniem geproduceerde films op YouTube, maar ook traumatiserende confrontaties die ze in de loop van de jaren ervoeren met welbepaalde plaatsen en individuen.
