He is self-taught and has practiced painting from a young age. In 1947 he enrolls himself in Brooklyn Community College\u0026rsquo;s art department. From the end of the Forties, apart from painting he also practices collage. From the Fifties, he creates constructions and assemblages from everyday, discarded materials, cloth etc. In the early Sixties he introduces the neon light into his work, a material which will become the most characteristic element of his career from now on. Initially, his neon works are associated with the realm of minimalist art. They develop into strict geometrical forms and sometimes the neon tubes are combined with materials such as wood and metal. Subsequently he begins to design installations on a large scale, for specific architectural spaces, or he uses neon as a means of intervention on architectural spaces and the natural environment. He realizes many commissions for public spaces. In 1973 he constructs the first of his series of \u003cem\u003eRooms\u003c/em\u003e at the San Francisco Museum of Art.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eIn 1980 he begins his series of wall-mounted canvases with neon tubes. He often replaces the painted canvas with square wooden frames, \u0026ldquo;clothed\u0026rdquo; in sheets of silver, gold or aluminum, thus creating a particularly mysterious atmosphere due to the ambient light which emanates from them and dematerializes the material status of the work. The works of this period show a deep spirituality and a turn towards the memories of familiar places and faces. From the mid-Eighties especially, he is also influenced by his frequent visits to Greece, his works acquiring references from Byzantine tradition and art. In 1930 vestigt hij zich samen met zijn familie in New York. Antonakos was een autodidact en schilderde al sinds zijn kinderjaren. In 1947 schrijft hij zich in voor de kunstafdeling van het Brooklyn Community College. Sinds het einde van de jaren veertig houdt hij zich naast schilderen ook bezig met collages. Vanaf de jaren vijftig ontwerpt hij constructies en assemblages uit alledaagse, afgedankte materialen, kleding, enz. In het begin van de jaren zestig gebruikt hij voor het eerst neonlicht in zijn werk, een materiaal dat vanaf dat moment het meest kenmerkende element van zijn carri\u0026egrave;re zal worden. In het begin worden zijn neonwerken geassocieerd met de minimalistische kunst. Ze groeien echter uit tot strikte geometrische vormen en soms worden de neonbuizen gecombineerd met materialen als hout en metaal. Geleidelijk aan begint hij installaties op een grotere schaal te ontwerpen, voor specifieke architecturale ruimtes, of ziet hij neon als een middel voor artistieke interventies in architecturale ruimtes en de natuurlijke omgeving. Hij maakt verschillende werken voor openbare instellingen. In 1973 ontwerpt hij zijn eerste reeks \u003cem\u003eRooms\u003c/em\u003e in het San Francisco Museum of Art.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eIn 1980 begint hij aan zijn reeks met aan de muur bevestigde canvassen met neonbuizen. Vaak vervangt hij het geschilderde canvas door vierkante, houten kaders, \u0026ldquo;bekleed\u0026rdquo; met zilveren, gouden of aluminium gekleurde bladen. Hierdoor cre\u0026euml;ert de kunstenaar een bijzonder mysterieuze sfeer dankzij het licht dat de werken uitstralen en ontdoet hij die werken van hun materi\u0026euml;le status. De werken uit die periode geven blijk van een diepe spiritualiteit en zijn gericht op de herinneringen aan vertrouwde plaatsen en gezichten. Met name sinds het midden van de jaren tachtig haalt hij inspiratie uit zijn regelmatige reizen naar Griekenland wat blijkt uit zijn verwijzingen naar de Byzantijnse tradities en kunst.
