“De maatschappij is niet zo idealistisch als men ze voorstelt. Het is daarom ook dat ik die maatschappij, die beschaving waarin we leven sterk in vraag stel. Tegenover de manipulatie en uitbuiting van de derde wereld is onze maatschappij soms koloniaal geladen en zeker kapitalistisch beladen. Daarom laat ik die fenomenen zien, maar dan nu als een soort van archeologie van deze tijd.”- Guillaume Bijl
Guillaume Bijl wordt gezien als een sleutelkunstenaar in de Belgische kunstscène van de jaren 1980, met installaties die de werkelijkheid enten in de kunstwereld, maar zijn oeuvre reikt verder terug. Het M HKA interesseert zich in het bijzonder voor dit vroegere werk en met name voor de conceptuele werken waaruit het verdere oeuvre volgt. Daarnaast verzamelde M HKA een uitgebreid ensemble met verschillende van zijn belangrijke installaties, zoals de Autorijschool, het TV-Quiz Decor, en de herinnering aan het sleutelwerk Chaussures ICC.
