LATT: Sound Effects #3 Cornelius Cardew

Event

MuHKA, Antwerpen

03 June 2008 - 31 August 2008

Experimental British composer Cornelius Cardew [1936–1981] brought music and visual art closely together in his work. His scores such as Treatise [1963–1966] and The Great Learning [1969–1970] owe their visual eloquence to his practice as a graphic artist, and his improvisational and group work was made with an awareness and connection to Flux art.

The Scratch Orchestra reflected the breaking down of boundaries between the different disciplines which took place during that decade with the development of sound. The exhibition pays tribute to the work of Cardew and the Scratch Orchestra. It includes an archive of rare material from that period, much of which has never been previously exhibited, including original manuscripts, scores, Scratch Books, photographs and recordings of Cardew’s music. M HKA has also commissioned graphic designer
Julie Peeters to develop a project in the form of an exhibition display, which will interpret this material for a contemporary audience. A film programme selected by Lucy Reynolds will examine Cardew’s radical approach to politics, experimental music, and collective working methods. On THU 05.06 several works by Cardew will be performed by the contemporary music ensemble Champ d’Action.
