In 2013 bestond de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen 350 jaar. Dat maakt haar de vierde oudste kunstschool ter wereld en de oudste van de lage landen. Ook het M HKA vierde mee: in het kader van Happy Birthday Dear Academie – met onder andere twee grote tentoonstellingen in MAS en MoMu – verwelkomde het museum de Academie op zijn bovenste verdiepingen.
Binnen MUHKADEMIE nodigden kunstenaar Nico Dockx (°1974, Ekeren) en kunsthistoricus Johan Pas (°1963, Schoten) kunstenaars en kunstliefhebbers, docenten en studenten, en denkers en doeners uit om na te denken over de rol van de academie én van het museum in een veranderende, ‘post-institutionele’ kunstwereld.
Een onderdeel van het project MUHKADEMIE was MUHKALUMNI, naar aanleiding van de 350e verjaardag van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen. MUHKALUMNI was een wekelijks afwisselende tentoonstelling waarin Ina Leys vijftien kunstenaars uit verschillende disciplines, afgestudeerd aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, uitnodigde om een interventie uit te oefenen in de Lonely At The Top-ruimtes van het M HKA. Zij hadden de opdracht gekregen om in dialoog te treden met de collectiewerken van het M HKA en de Iconostase en gribouilli structuur van Yona Friedman.
Bij MUHKALUMNI viel het ‘white cube’-gegeven weg en Yona Friedmans werk diende als tentoonstellingsstructuur waarin en omheen werken van de alumni-kunstenaars en ‘ijkpunten’ uit de museumcollectie werden geïntegreerd, getoond, en/of in dialoog werden geplaatst.
