Thé Van Bergen – Au Paradis

Event

MUHKA, Antwerpen

11 May 2002 - 18 August 2002

Throughout his oeuvre, the Antwerp artist Thé van Bergen (°1946, The Netherlands) employed a wide range of materials, techniques and styles. Therefore, his subject is painting itself: how does a picture come about? (programme Flor Bex)

In successive series, he concentrated each time anew on a certain problem in the art of painting, whereby the focus was always on the act of painting; and the image evolves in an intuitive and associative way in the interaction between action and material. In his recent work - the M HKA is exhibiting paintings from the period 1999-2002 - the artist treats his basic theme more freely: the various aspects of the art of painting are investigated alongside each other, no longer in series. In this way, the visitor is confronted with a limited number of motifs, each time treated in a different way, which thus acquire another meaning through the way they are painted.
