Literary synopsis
Engelen van ijs is the story of a 22 year-old woman, Marike, who seeks to make sense of her life: her gruelling relationship with a man who is addicted to pills; her childhood in England with a father who saw the devil in her; the fear that she will get her grandmother Klara’s mental illness. Marike notes her thoughts in journals that she buries in boxes. She keeps her individual personality on paper, hiding it underground. But Marike’s life will bright up when she finds her aunt, who lives in a convent in Iceland. There, between the eccentric nuns, she finds meaning in life.
