The wipers moved rhythmically back and forth in the water. They were powered by a photocell, a light sensor which activated the wipers only when the sun was shining. The intensity of the sunlight controlled their wiping speed, creating intervals ranging from one to twenty seconds. Mimicking natural rhythms, this self-sustaining system symbolically connected human technology to the cycles of nature.\u003c/p\u003e\u003chr\u003e\u003cp\u003eRoelandt’s best-known work from this period [1980] is \u003ci\u003eAuto mobile tergicristallo\u003c/i\u003e,\u0026nbsp;a collection of moving windscreen wipers placed in a pond in The Middelheim\u0026nbsp;Museum in Antwerp for the \u003ci\u003eAutomobiënnale 2\u003c/i\u003e in 1985. The work so caught\u0026nbsp;the eye that a local newspaper, without any reference to Roelandt, The\u0026nbsp;Middelheim or even to the fact that it was an art work, used a photo of it as a\u0026nbsp;joke on the continual rain of that summer.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom the catalogue of the Middelheim Biennial: The project \u003ci\u003eAuto mobile\u0026nbsp;tergicristallo\u003c/i\u003e emphasises – by means of the wind screen wiper as “pars\u0026nbsp;pro toto” for the car –the auto-mobility, the self-movement. The cycle of\u0026nbsp;natural day light influences a photo-electric cell and thus controls the electric\u0026nbsp;energy. The wind screen wipers are\u0026nbsp;planted in a pond. Celle-ci contrôlait donc la vitesse d’essuyage et engendrait des intervalles allant d’une à vingt secondes.
