With this pocket-sized state portrait of a worker who pretends to be a nobleman, the painter may want to put a smile on the face of his audience. Perhaps the artist saw his model as a Flemish version of Pulcinella, the famous figure of the Commedia dell\u0026#39;Arte, the comic theatre that was uncommonly popular in Europe from the middle of the sixteenth century.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eThe brush of the artist, however, creates a great monumentality that is rather unusual in these kinds of tableaux. This has to do with the simplicity of the composition, the omission of anecdotal elements and the subtle mixing of shades of grey with a little ochre, blue and red. The shadow cast by the legs on the floor creates drama. It is not clear who realized this beautiful painting. The painting used to be attributed to Adriaen Brouwer, although in terms of subject matter it differs from the drinking, smoking and card-playing pub guests we usually associate with this master \u0026ndash; or the pain-riddled grimaces during the disinfection of a wound or the operation of a foot. De schaduw die de benen op de grond werpt, zorgt voor dramatiek. Het staat niet vast wie dit prachtig stukje schilderwerk realiseerde. Vroeger stond het schilderijtje op naam van Adriaen Brouwer, hoewel het qua onderwerp afwijkt van de drinkende, rokende en kaartspelende kroeggasten die we ons bij deze meester doorgaans voor de geest halen \u0026ndash; of de van pijn vertrokken grimassen bij het ontsmetten van een wonde of het opereren van een voet. L\u0026rsquo;ombre des jambes sur le sol conf\u0026egrave;re un caract\u0026egrave;re dramatique au portrait. \u0026Agrave; ce jour, on ignore qui a peint ce magnifique petit tableau. Autrefois, on l\u0026rsquo;attribuait \u0026agrave; Adriaen Brouwer, bien que le sujet soit assez \u0026eacute;loign\u0026eacute; des clients de tavernes qui boivent, fument et jouent aux cartes qu\u0026rsquo;\u0026eacute;voque en g\u0026eacute;n\u0026eacute;ral le nom de ce ma\u0026icirc;tre \u0026ndash; ou les grimaces de douleur sur les visages de ceux dont on d\u0026eacute;sinfecte une plaie ou op\u0026egrave;re le pied.
