Homage to David Hammons

Jimmie Durham

1997

Installation, Variable dimensions.
Materials: Porcelain, stone, PVC

Collection: Collection of Karel and Martine Hooft, Belgium.

The stoned urinal hanging on the wall here is a double homage. It is a direct reference to the American artist David Hammons who, is his turn, pays a homage to Marcel Duchamp through his artworks. In this case, the most evident connection is Hammons’ Untitled installation from 1990, when he placed urinals on trees in a forest in Ghent. Jimmie Durham is an admirer of the work of David Hammons, who has proclaimed himself as the CEO of the DOC – the “Duchamp Outpatient Clinic”.
