Literary synopsis

With the failure of his marriage, an architect comes to a confrontational insight: whereas he designs houses for other families, he has lost his own home. Nothing seems like forever, his designs are already given an expiration date on the drawing board. He not only experiences an erosion of his profession, but also of his soul. To regain his inspiration, he returns to Japan, to the temples and gardens that shaped him as a young architect. He immerses himself in the rituals surrounding the Ise Jingu Temple, the 2,000-year-old shrine that is demolished and rebuilt every 20 years. Against the background of Japanese culture, he reflects on his roots, how the landscape of his youth has influenced the course of his life.
