While the work of Charline Tyberghein (b. 1993, Antwerp) seems playful and straightforward, it conceals thoughtful metaphors with more than a hint of humour and surrealism. Tyberghein draws inspiration from contemporary social media and its abundance of symbols and pictograms, as well as from art history and books on pictograms, road signs, the symbolism on tombstones, flags and coats of arms. The three paintings in this presentation are teeming with everyday objects and symbols that seem to project forward or fade into the background of the canvas, thanks to the use of trompe-l'œil techniques. The end result holds the middle between the abstract and the figurative.
Charline Tyberghein is represented by Gallery Sofie Van de Velde.
