De interne oorlog [The Internal War] was purchased for the city collection. Eyckermans paints realistic characters – or parts of them – in strange settings. These characters are often portraits of friends or passers-by in his studio. For De interne oorlog, Eyckermans portrays his life companion. He lets busts, statues or imposing entrance gates enter into a dialogue with contemporary scenes and components. For Eyckermans, painting is a medium to give a place – literally and figuratively – to events, and to get a grip on the world around him. His canvases are therefore very personal, almost as intimate as a diary.
