Gordon Matta-Clark

1975

Intervention
Materials:

For the 1975 Paris Biennale, Matta-Clark made large cone-shaped holes in two houses near the Centre Georges Pompidou, in Les Halles, a district that was being demolished. His aim was to allow passers-by to see through to the Centre Pompidou while it was under construction.

‘A non-monumental counterpart to the magnificent backdrop of Centre Pompidou. During the two weeks that the façade and walls were cut away, the activity created its own ‘amphitheatre-like stage’ for passers-by.’(GMC)
