2024

Photography, 3 x (43 x 33 x 2,8 cm).
Materials: 3 slides: Fujichrome, cardboard, maple frame, museum glass

Collection: Stad Antwerpen, in langdurige bruikleen in M HKA (Inv. no. SCA0084).

‘In the series Blanca, created in the mountain village of the same name in Southern Spain, I used my body as a tripod. Exactly eight minutes and nineteen seconds, the time it takes for the sunlight to reach us.’
- Liesbet Grupping

Liesbet Grupping uses the unpredictability of photography to make things visible that we normally cannot see. She plays with flaws in the camera or the photographic process, rather than avoiding or concealing them. She presents photography as a lively and changeable process that can never be fully controlled. For Blanca, she points her camera at the sun. In the final slides, it is almost impossible to distinguish between the representation of a natural phenomenon (sunlight, mountains) and what is caused by the material and technical properties of the medium itself.

About M HKA / Mission Statement

The M HKA is a museum for contemporary art, film and visual culture in its widest sense. It is an open place of encounter for art, artists and the public. The M HKA aspires to play a leading role in Flanders and to extend its international profile by building upon Antwerp's avant-garde tradition. The M HKA bridges the relationship between artistic questions and wider societal issues, between the international and the regional, artists and public, tradition and innovation, reflection and presentation. Central here is the museum's collection with its ongoing acquisitions, as well as related areas of management and research.

About M HKA Ensembles

The M HKA Ensembles represent our first steps towards initiating the public to today's art-related digital landscape. With the help of these new media, our aim is to offer our artworks a better and fuller array of support for their presentation and public understanding.
