The artist is here analysing a pedestal that is itself sculpture. He presents the viewer with a problem: where does the sculpture begin? Is the lower part the pedestal and the upper part the sculpture? In his view the whole thing is the sculpture. In this way the traditional purpose of the pedestal, uphold the sculpture, becomes invalid. The sculpture is very austere. It looks very modern and even minimal. In modern sculpture, unlike classical sculpture, the function of the pedestal is no longer relevant. The sculpture stands straight on the floor and the pedestal itself becomes a sculpture. This breaks down the traditional distinction between the subordinate pedestal and the presented sculpture. Vermeiren uses the classical pedestal as a starting point for his work and thereby examines the relationship between the modern sculpture (without a pedestal) with its history, and the possibilities of contemporary sculpture. These pedestal sculptures are also evidence of a study of the way an artist is able to pick up elements from the history of sculpture and art in general. In addition to the reference to the classical pedestal, these two objects inverted on top of each other also form a column. This evokes one of the fundamental archetypes of art. But this work also touches upon positive and negative, presence and absence, elevation and displacement.\u003c/p\u003e"},{"locale":"nl","short_description":"","description":"\u003cp\u003eDit werk bestaat uit twee identieke gipsen sokkels waarbij de bovenste sokkel omgekeerd op de onderste werd geplaatst. De kunstenaar analyseert hier de sokkel die sculptuur is. Hij plaatst de toeschouwer voor een probleem: waar begint de sculptuur? Is het onderste gedeelte de sokkel en het bovenste gedeelte de sculptuur? Voor Vermeiren is de totaliteit de sculptuur. Zo vervalt hier de traditionele rol van de sokkel, namelijk het beeld te verheffen. De sculptuur is zeer sober. Ze oogt heel modern en zelfs minimaal. Anders dan bij de klassieke beeldhouwkunst is in de moderne beeldhouwkunst de functie van de sokkel niet meer relevant. De sculptuur staat los op de grond en de sokkel zelf wordt tot sculptuur. Zo wordt ook de traditionele scheiding tussen de dienende sokkel en het gepresenteerde beeld verbroken. Vermeiren gebruikt als uitgangspunt voor zijn werk de klassieke sokkel en onderzoekt zo de relatie tussen de moderne (sokkelloze) sculptuur en haar geschiedenis en de mogelijkheden van de hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst. De sokkelsculpturen getuigen ook van een onderzoek naar de wijze waarop een kunstenaar zich elementen uit de geschiedenis van de (beeldhouw)kunst kan eigen maken. Naast de verwijzing naar de klassieke sokkel, suggereren de twee voetstukken omgekeerd op elkaar ook een zuil. Zo wordt hier een fundamenteel archetype uit de kunst opgeroepen.
