Antwerp followed\u0026nbsp;suit two days later with the creation of the Vrije\u0026nbsp;Aktiegroep Antwerpen (\u0026lsquo;Antwerp Free Action\u0026nbsp;Group\u0026rsquo; \u0026ndash; VAGA). This loose group of individuals\u0026nbsp;reacted against the rigid policies of the city\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;Museum of Fine Art, focusing primarily on social\u0026nbsp;and ecological issues. VAGA declared, for instance, via a manifesto and a non-violent occupation\u0026nbsp;with a sit-in on 23 June 1968, that it\u0026nbsp;wanted Conscienceplein, a square in Antwerp,\u0026nbsp;to become a car-free zone. The following week,\u0026nbsp;the demonstrators brought road signs with them bearing the words \u0026lsquo;Autovrije zone\u0026rsquo;. The local police\u0026nbsp;countered the demonstration by blocking off\u0026nbsp;neighbouring Wolstraat with their van, forcing\u0026nbsp;cars to drive across Conscienceplein.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\r\n\u003cp\u003eAnd then\u0026nbsp;it happened: Ludo Loose drove\u0026nbsp;up in a truck and asked the police if he could park\u0026nbsp;on the square to unload blocks of ice for a restaurant\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;refrigeration system. Permission was\u0026nbsp;granted, but rather than delivering the blocks\u0026nbsp;to the restaurant, he unloaded them \u0026ndash; assisted\u0026nbsp;by Hugo Heyrman and Panamarenko \u0026ndash; onto\u0026nbsp;the road. Panamarenko had the idea of stacking\u0026nbsp;the blocks to form a cube shape, with the result\u0026nbsp;that they stuck together and froze onto the\u0026nbsp;road surface, turning the ice into a natural traffic\u0026nbsp;barrier. The structure is strongly reminiscent of\u0026nbsp;Allan Kaprow\u0026rsquo;s \u003ca href=\"http://ensembles.mhka.be/items/9504/assets/25211\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eFluids\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e (1967), albeit on a smaller\u0026nbsp;scale and with a bigger social impact. The police\u0026nbsp;had no option but to reopen Wolstraat to traffic.\u0026nbsp;The campaigners\u0026rsquo; success was celebrated exuberantly\u0026nbsp;on the square the following week, in a\u0026nbsp;full-on street party. White balloons were handed\u0026nbsp;out, turf laid, bands invited and films screened,\u0026nbsp;including Marcel Broodthaers\u0026rsquo;s \u003ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4RSW-G5ZTE\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eLe Corbeau et le\u0026nbsp;Renard\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e and Joseph Beuys\u0026rsquo;s Eurasienstab.
