Melancholia is a direct reference to Manet’s Olympia. In 1986 Scholte had already caused quite a stir by repainting the Olympia on a postcard. His reaction to the subsequent criticism was to paint an exact copy of the newspaper article in which the author had voiced his critique. As such Melancholia fits perfectly into the postmodern tradition.
