Relation of the novel to the artist’s practice

For their exhibition “Naming You” at the Secession (Vienna), Little Warsaw have written a novel of the same title that supplies the conceptual backdrop for their show. Three copies of the book, each containing a different fragment of the novel, are available in reading corners furnished with seating accommodations. In the text, the artists reflect on the genesis and context of the various pieces on display. The objects range from geometrical wooden structures and various historic documents to a mosaic colour field. To tackle this diversity, a fictional fragmentary narrative has been created that is present in the real exhibition setup in the form of several chapters of a book. Little Warsaw thus question the role of fiction and myth-making, of prefabricated identities and constructed narratives against the backdrop of being truthful to one’s artistic endeavours in the hard-edged reality of today’s art world.
