On the right-hand panel the white representation is almost invisible, reduced to near complete monochrome. On the left-hand panel we see his invisible black double painted in a reductive style, come emphatically to the fore from the dark background, mainly because of the white of the eyes and teeth. Hij eigent ze zich toe en plaats ze naast elkaar. Op het linker-paneel is de witte afbeelding bijna onzichtbaar, gereduceerd tot een bijna volledig monochroom vlak. Op het rechterpaneel zien we zijn zwarte dubbelganger, geschilderd in een gereduceerde stijl, nadrukkelijk naar voor komen uit de donkere achtergrond, voornamelijk door zijn witte ogen en tanden. Marshall definieert op deze manier de sociale onzichtbaarheid van de zwarte bevolking in termen van twee uiterste kleuren – puur wit en puur zwart.
