In 1980, Dewaele ventured out into the street armed with a video camera and one simple question: \u0026quot;what does the ICC mean to you?\u0026quot;, mapping the extent of the proverbial man-in-the-street\u0026rsquo;s connection with (or, more pointedly, disconnection from) the world of contemporary art. In 2004, the video recording of this quasi-performance was screened at the entrance of the exhibition \u0026quot;Dear ICC\u0026quot;, in which the museum looked back at certain long-forgotten aspects of its own prehistory. MuHKA also owns a series of photographs documenting another performance simply titled \u0026quot;Exhibiting\u0026quot;, which Dewaele conceived for the doors of the historical Groeninge museum in Bruges in 1976. Another work from 1976, titled \u0026quot;24.800 m2 sculpture\u0026quot;, highlights Dewaele\u0026rsquo;s early engagement with what only much later became known as \u0026quot;institutional critique\u0026quot;: the work\u0026rsquo;s physical roots are in a mail art project in which several museums generously offered their exhibition spaces to the artist by way of their official letterhead - a virtual exhibition covering some twenty-five thousand square meters of institutional ground.\u0026quot;\u003c/p\u003e\r\n"},{"locale":"nl","short_description":"","description":"\u003cp\u003e\u0026quot;Daniel Dewaele is autodidact. De relatie tussen kunst en maatschappij en de betekenis die kunst kan hebben voor de maatschappij is sinds ca. 1975 zijn actieterrein. Volgens hem is zijn kunst \u0026#39;ontstaan uit de reflectie over kunst en de relatie of interdependentie tussen kunst en economie, samenleving, ideologie...\u0026#39; Dewaele beperkt zich niet tot het in vraag stellen van kunst. Ook het functioneren van kunstinstellingen, kunst als fetisj, kunst als handelswaar en maatschappelijke thema\u0026#39;s als werkloosheid en racisme worden door hem kritisch onder de loep genomen. Door zijn methodes (enquete, interview, inventariseren...) kan hij net zo goed een sociologisch kunstenaar worden genoemd. Dewaele gaat tegen het traditionele eenrichtingsverkeer kunstenaar-publiek. Daarom hanteert hij niet de taal van de kunst, maar de taal van de maatschappij met o.a. hedendaagse communicatiemiddelen.
