The performance took place in the slums of the Peruvian capital Lima as part of the Biennale in 2002. The installation consists of three videos and a series of tables on which documentation can be read. Alÿs himself describes the action as a biblical image: ‘I don’t know whether the dune actually did move, but something certainly happened in the four hours we dug at it under a leaden sky. The people climbed the hill and dug sand. Something happened that goes beyond one’s understanding; it was a small miracle. There was something symbolic and at the same time something very real about it.’\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe artist calls his actions ‘fables’ or ‘stories’. They are characterised by an irrational element and by humour. There is something absurd about \u003ci\u003eWhen Faith Moves Mountains\u003c/i\u003e: a huge effort is made to achieve a tiny result. At the same time, it is precisely this aspect that gives the work its infectiously utopian elan. This meticulously planned action radiates an unconditional belief in the ability to have an effect on the world. Art cannot change the world, but it can help make minds ready for it. As an artist, Francis Alÿs wants to make it possible for his public to think differently, without imposing comments, solutions or judgements.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis performance is a sign of hope in a country suffering a political crisis. La performance est un signe d'espoir dans un pays plongé en pleine crise politique. Αυτή ακριβώς η πλευρά του έργου, όμως, είναι ταυτόχρονα που του χαρίζει αυτή τη μεταδοτική ουτοπική ζωντάνια. Η προσεκτικά προετοιμασμένη αυτή δράση επιβεβαιώνει την απεριόριστη πίστη στο γεγονός ότι μπορούμε να φέρουμε κάποιο αποτέλεσμα στον κόσμο. Η τέχνη δεν μπορεί να αλλάξει τον κόσμο, μπορεί όμως να βοηθήσει στην προετοιμασία του μυαλού των ανθρώπων.
