In this film Matta-Clark documents his intervention in an average American wooden house on Humphrey Street in Englewood, New Jersey. He saws through the middle of the house. Pieces of the foundation are then carefully removed so that the whole gently folds open into two symmetrical parts. Splitting was carried out in a neighbourhood in transition from a black to a white neighbourhood, so the existing population was forced to move. He breaks open the form of standardised houses which, as a result of all sorts of rules and modularisation had become uniform.
