Literary synopsis

"Ms. Magid's impressive New York debut includes Lincoln Ocean Victor Eddy, a video and series of photographs accompanied by a haunting novella. All record her five-month friendship with a New York City police officer. She initiated it by asking him to search her (he didn't) and then shadowing him during his night shift, usually on subway platforms in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The best part of the work is the quietly heart-rending novella, a kind of tunnel vision of two people moving along parallel tracks while the city hums around them. The relationship is never consummated, but Lincoln Ocean Victor Eddy spells love." —The New York Times

Relation of the novel to the artist’s practice

Jill Magid created an installation that toured throughout a number of international venues. The installation includes combinations of materials and media created and collected during her training with the officer: digital photographs; sound recordings; CCTV video; objects; posters; drawings; and the novella Lincoln Ocean Victor Eddy. As an installation, visitors are welcome to enter the story as an audiovisual experience and view original artifacts.

Lincoln Ocean Victor Eddy is also presented before a live audience as a performance, adapted from the black book in mainly dialogue form. It offers a temporary face and voice to our undisclosed officer. As an audience member, you're invited to witness Jill Magid and actor Ed Vas perform the story as part theatrical rendition, and part poetry reading. From the artist’s website it is possible to take the story as a podcast, which is adapted from the novella as part narrative, part dialogue. Performed also by Jill Magid and actor Ed Vas, the podcast is an intimate story-on-the-go, perfect for your next subway commute.
