Gum-Kunst [Gum-Art] springs from artist Christophe Terlinden's strong interest in societal critique and his ironically humorous attitude vis-à-vis the Establishment and the world of art. For 10 eurocents you can with a simple 'turn' of the machine get a piece of chewing gum, and for the somewhat larger investment of 50 eurocents the 'turn' gets you a piece of art. The inattentive visitor might not even notice the minor interventions with respect to the gum machine itself. The interventions are minimal, but nonetheless open up possibilities for reflection. Terlinden himself describes his work-process as follows: "You can think of it as scanning various ideas, a guideline, a way of working. And I try to take care that nothing becomes definitive, so I can still change things right up to exhibition day."
