Exposition: Reaching Out. Un hommage à Jan Cox

En 2019, nous célébrons le centième anniversaire de la naissance de Jan Cox (1919-1980), cofondateur de la Jeune Peinture Belge et importante figure internationale des débuts de la galerie anversoise De Zwarte Panter. Cox y a créé ses œuvres les plus percutantes, caractérisées par des compositions à l’atmosphère magique, surréelle et par des références à des thèmes « classiques » comme la violence, la cruauté et la vulnérabilité. Qui plus est, Cox considérait le métier d’artiste non seulement comme un projet artistique, mais humaniste aussi.
Le M HKA aborde Jan Cox comme un artiste contemporain et se focalise surtout sur son œuvre plus tardive, avec des travaux que l’on peut définir comme des « œuvres sources » ou des « œuvres pilotes ». Il s’agit de pièces dans lesquelles l’artiste part à l’aventure et expérimente, des œuvres pertinentes qui gardent aujourd’hui encore toute leur fraîcheur et qui invitent le spectateur à une réflexion sur la condition humaine.
